To Kill A Mockingbird Final Paper
Even in the smallest of towns there is social inequalities. In the small town of
Maycomb County there were some major inequalities including a man named Tom Robinson
who was put to trial unfairly by a white woman and received the death penalty for being black.
This novel teaches us a lot about social inequality. Social Inequality is unfair and causes
divisions in societies. There were social inequalities including African Americans. But, there
were also situations where Scout a young girl was ridiculed for being a tomboy. There are still
social inequalities in today's societies.
Social Inequality is unfair and causes divisions in societies. African Americans were
treated unfairly in the book just as they were in those times. African Americans had to have
their separate church from the white folks. Lula; a member of the church got angry at
Calpurnia when she brought Jem and Scout to their church. "You aint got no business bringin'
white chillun here they got their church, we got our'n." This just proves how seperated the
two communities are. Another example, is whenever the Tom Robinson case was active the
African Americans were not allowed to sit in the courtroom, they were forced to sit in the
balcony away from the white people. This is unfair treatment to them. They shouldnt have the
worst seat in the building but the white folks did not care.
Scout, Atticus' daughter is ridiculed for being a tomboy. "Aunt Alexandra was a fanatic
on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if i wore breeches; when I
said I could do nothing in a dress, she said i wasnt supposed to do things that required
pants." Scout did not enjoy being in girly clothes, she prefered to be in boys clothes. It was
more comfortable to her and thats what she wanted to wear. But, Aunt Alexandra and every
other female did not agree with how she was. Alexandra forced Scout to wear a dress at one
point in the text. "I felt the starched walls of a pink cotton peneteniary closing in on me, and
for the second time in my life i thought of running away. Immediately." Nobody accepted the
fact that Scout wanted to dress like a boy and hang with the boys. The only person who did
not care if she acted like one of the boys was her father Atticus.
There are still social inequalities in todays society. An example of social inequality is in
the Occupational sex segregation. Woman have more jobs in cleaning and in taking care of
people. While men have more jobs in mechanics and hands on jobs. This is a proven fact by
the stanford center on poverty and inequality. To Kill a Mockingbird just brings out how real
the segregation and inequality really was back then. To kill a mockingbird was a real world
example of how unfair people were treated if they werent the "right color" or if they followed
the stereotype on that certain gender.
In conclusion, there were social inequalities and they were unfair. They weren't just
against african americans but also against girls who didnt follow the sterotype on how they
should act. Social inequality is a major problem back then and as well as in todays society.
This book clearly shows the unfairness and mistreatment. That is how this book shows social
inequality.
